Youth theatre – Studio Figure and Dawn Collective Sometimes it feels like a storm is living in Novi's chest. Nobody knows why. And certainly not herself. One day, when the storm rages again, Novi flees into the attic. An old, dusty place full of boxes, yellowed photos and the smell of long ago. But then something strange happens: two mysterious figures appear – fighting, roaring, and when they see Novi, fleeing. They each disappear into a different photo album. And Novi? He jumps after it. In Kakek, Opa & Ik, Novi delves into the hidden stories of her family. Through old photo albums, letters and forgotten melodies she travels back in time, to a past that is slowly coming to life. What starts as a playful journey of discovery into where she comes from, grows into a magical journey through her family history, and into a shared colonial past of the Netherlands and Indonesia that still has an impact in the present. Along the way, Novi discovers that the anger she feels may be older than herself. That emotions can travel, from heart to heart, from generation to generation. And that understanding sometimes starts with looking, listening — and feeling. Studio Figur, founded by artistic directors Noufri Bachdim and Pluck Venema, creates poetic and sensory figure theater. New stories are told using physical play, puppet/object theatre, live film and music that focus on current issues. Dawn Collective is an all-female theater production house in Amsterdam. They are enthusiastic about new voices and perspectives, stories that show the vibrancy of our society in all its colors. Told from my own experience, beyond assumptions and beyond stereotypes. They tell stories in which you can recognize yourself, but which also let you see through the eyes of someone else. Theater for all ages! Curious about what's planned? View our entire program!
